Chip N' Dale: Rescue Rangers Model Sheets (1988)

Here's a blast from the past for all you Disney Afternoon fans. This was the first show for which we created these one-sheets for the animators. The idea was to give them an easy to pin-up quick-reference sheet that featured construction info as well as a variety of poses and expressions. Note the shows creators, Tad Stones and Alan Zaslove, signed-off on the sheets. Alan got his start in the business as a young buck in the WB shorts department back in "the day" and later at UPA in the early 50's. He would eventually become my mentor as I began to take on some directing duties for the Darkwing Duck series.

  2. I'm afraid I fall into the age demographic that grew up watching these shows you have worked on 20 odd years ago (Rescue Rangers, and Darkwing Duck). But it just shows, in contrast to more of your recent work, how you have worked your way up to where you are today.
I always find character designs fascinating to look at, for artistic and nostalgic reasoning. So I hope this won't be the last vintage character designs we see on this great blog of yours.

  5. I was given this Zipper model sheet back in 1989 or so by some coworker or other(I'm sure I still have the 10th gen xerox somewhere). I had no idea who had done it but it was right in there with all the great Disney models of the golden age that got passed around because it was so beautifully done.

  12. Oh wow! I've seen high resolution scans of the xeroxes of these floating around the internet for years, but it's cool to see the originals - so much soft detail that wasn't on the copies! :o

  16. Hi Mr. Shelton, do you still have the model sheets of the unnamed little girl who eventually lost her beloved kitten "Spunky" from the 1st "Rescue Rangers" episode "Catteries Not Included" to look at on my PC, do you also have the model sheets from the 1st "Rescue Ranger" episode "Catteries Not Included" as well, do you still have them with you now or is your "Rescue Rangers" co-animator Ken Thompkins still have them with him??

    1. Sorry, Anwar. I don't have the model sheets you asked about. Kenny Thompkins most likely designed the incidental characters for that episode.

  18. In the fianl part of the "Rescue Rangers" episode "To The Rescue", there was a blond-haired girl named "Sheila" who's emotional that her beloved puppy got lost and in the first "Rescue Rangers" episode "Catteries Not Included", the girl with brown hair who lost her beloved kitten "Spunky", how did you all get the idea on this story??

  19. In the "Catteries Not Included" episode, the little girl wears a red coat with a white-collar shirt inside and blue shorts and in the house scene where the "Rangers" returned "Spunky" back to the little girl and I saw her barefoot as she was wearing a pink dress pajamas, I think she's woke up from bed as she opens her door and seeing "Spunky", how do you guys come up with her being barefoot and wearing pink sleepers, why did'nt she wore the same attire that she wore inside the police station and her house??

Do you know where are the model sheets for the little girl from that episode, did Kenny Thompkins have the sketches of the emotional little girl who lost "Spunky" with him now or is it hidden somewhere??
