Toby, technical question if I may: I often wonder about the proper (if any) positioning of the hand while holding a pen/pencil/stilus for your style of drawing.
Sometimes I see comic book artists holding their pencils in the lower 2/3 and rather tightly. Weirdly, my drawing seems to improve in different ways when I am in the upper half.
are there methods you use to get expressive gesture and fluidity?
I do hold the pen/stylus loosely while drawing (though not up high). It's easier to get a fluid line if you don't bare down on the pen. What you're probably noticing when you hold the pen up high is that it forces you to be loose and rhythmic with your strokes by taking away that finite control you get when you hold the pen down low. I tend to use quick rapid strokes when I draw.
Holding the pen loosely also cuts down on fatigue.
hahaha, the plot thickens! i can't wait until the next instalment!! :D
