This movie was in pre-production for many years and was conceived in just about every way imaginable before becoming the "Tangled" movie that is currently in theaters. During my brief time on the movie, about 6 weeks, the story-telling was darker and more dramatic in tone than what was in the final movie. There were no songs, no slapstick -- and no horse! (...just a basset hound.) Mother Gothel was a sinister, brooding villain in the tradition of the Queen in Snow White.
These panels are from a sequence in which Mother Gothel begins to suspect that Rapunzel has had contact with the outside world. Rapunzel catches herself carelessly humming a tune she learned from "the intruder" and must quickly cover up.
Everthing here is digitally drawn on a Cintique in Photoshop.
wohhh I didnt know you worked in Tangled. Nice Toby!!
ReplyDeleteCool! just watched the movie and those sketches look even better than 3D!
ReplyDeleteAwesome! would love to see a disney movie without the songs and slapstick.
ReplyDeleteThese are great - more please! I saw TANGLED the other night and really dug it. Sounds like the old take would have been really cool too though.
ReplyDeleteCan I ask what brush settings you're using on the cintiq? I've been using one at work for a little bit now and I'm still not entirely happy with my settings for sketching.
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised that these have been digital (I assume the other recent posts have been, as well). Not so much as because of the line weight, but because of the paper-like texture you've incorporated. It looks nice - is this an addition of your own, or are you using a setting?

ReplyDeleteThe paper texture is from a China Marker Brush-Set created in Photoshop by a colleague of mine at Disney while we were on Princess and the Frog.
Jeff Kunze asked...
ReplyDelete- what brush settings you're using on the cintiq?
On this sequence I used the China Marker brush as mentioned above to draw with and shade. But normally I draw with a standard anti-aliased brush with a modified tip that is elliptical and set at an angle.
thanks for the post and the info on your boards. These are beautiful!
ReplyDeleteToby, I have to say that I really enjoy the quality of the expressions in these boards and the right choices of angles for each shot. Kudos. I also like quality of the shading and lines any chance your colleague would be willing to share the presets for that brush?
ReplyDeleteSweet! Nice work! Wish i could get that paper texture....keep rocking! Cheers!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful roughs - I would have much preferred to have seen the film as you described it!
ReplyDeleteA China Marker brush? Care to share?
ReplyDeleteThese boards are fantastic, Toby! Really warm and rich!
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed Tangled. I think the film raised the bar on so many levels.
It's so surprising to see these "Tangled" concept arts. I loved the final version, but these early drafts just pique me. I'm surprised Disney originally did a version of Rapunzel that was closer to the story and with no songs. I wonder what that would've been like.
