I've always had a soft spot for Mickey. One of the first projects I worked on at Disney was Mickey's Christmas Carol. The Brave Little Tailor and The Pointer are a couple of my favorites. I especially like when Mickey (voiced by Walt himself) gets mad at Pluto in The Pointer and calls him a "bone-head!". There's something genuine about that moment that makes me laugh.
Though he's since been reduced to a corporate trademark who baby-sits preschoolers for a living, I'm glad he once lived, long ago in the golden age of cartoons.
These were drawn digitally on a Wacom Cintique using Photoshop. (click to enlarge)
Personally I think he would've been better off in the Public Domain already, that copyright extension did nothing but break the system and the excuse they used for it (Mickey Mouse) isn't even culturally relevant any more.
ReplyDeleteMeanwhile works like Andrew Loomis's books which would've benefitted entire generations are sitting out of print due to legal limbo, those who want free content are forced into piracy, a great amount of content is not being archived for historical purposes and those who want to build on others works do so at their own peril.
Copyright was suppose to encourage creativity, to let them milk a single product for the rest of anyones natural life is bad enough and speaks of laziness, but to extend that long beyond anyones life-span just speaks of corporate greed.
What's your opinion on the matter?
I miss it too. I gotta say...
ReplyDeleteBrave Little Tailor was also one of my favs, i love the scene when mickey is describing how he defeated the flies and the king believes hes talking about giants!
So nice! Did you see Mickey's runaway brain? That was nice. They should do more of those!
ReplyDeleteThese are so great! I will never get over the appeal of your work.
ReplyDeleteEach of these is so fantastic, but I'm especially loving that third one down. Man! Great gestures!!
ReplyDeleteCool drawings though Mickey doesn't look as fiesty as I like. Then again my Mickey is the Floyd Gottfredson one so I remember Mickey when he really had gumption.
ReplyDeleteAmazing!!
ReplyDeleteGreat drawings. I love Mickey too. I have wondered for a long time why they don't use him more. I wish they would just make more traditional shorts with him and the others. i can't stand those remix and blam cam crap they do on Disney channel right now. They show just play the shorts as they were without all the graphics and voice over nonsense .
ReplyDeleteThese are insane. You are insane. brilliant.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful drawings.
ReplyDeleteWOW! These are absolutely beautiful!
ReplyDeleteUna soltura admirable, una fluidez enorme, un gran trabajo, realmente excelente, da gusto ver cómo Mickey cobra vida. Amazing!
ReplyDeleteEpic Mickey.......
ReplyDeleteHow'd I miss these? And already the bandwagon is spilling over!
ReplyDeleteNothing that's done to Mickey now can alter what he was, which you captured beautifully here.
Superb!!!
ReplyDeleteWow. It's like Micky never left.
ReplyDeleteI was just talking to my friend how much the world needs Mickey again.
ReplyDeleteThis is incredible.
thanks for sharing.
Third one is also my favorite!
ReplyDeleteI get my dose of Mickey on video games, like Kingdom Hearts (and I would love to play Epic Mickey, even though I have seen mixed reviews), but it would be nice to see him star on something from the animation studios again.
