I've been having a lot of fun drawing Darkwing on my Cintique lately. I wanted to see if I could squeeze more out of the design and loosen up on the poses a bit. Let's Get Dangerous!
I don't use a crazy custom brush for my line work. I just take a hard round default brush and modify the tip to be elliptical and angled for a chisel effect. This gives me a nice thick and thin. For toning I have a set of China Marker brushes that a friend shared with me while a Disney.
Regarding model sheets for DW villians -- Turn-arounds and poses were done for these characters, but they were not compiled into a one-sheet like DW, Gosalyn, and LP.
I don't use a crazy custom brush for my line work.
"Crazy custom brush"? What would that entail I wonder? Would it be akin to Fred Moore's magic pencil?
Seriously it's a good question and one I have often found myself thinking of, especially when looking wistfully at digital drawings like these. But the magic (or the craziness) is always in the head of the person holding the stylus.
Tell me you hit Control-Z at least a FEW times...otherwise you're not human and I must report you to the government. Love the confident linework in these sketches!
Absolutely love these! Its so refreshing so see some new work of DW from his original artist. The line work is so nice- every line has a purpose..
:) Also makes me feel like I'm on the right track because that's how I've been teaching myself how to sketch/do early line work.
On a completely random note- while visiting some friends in St. Pete over the Halloween weekend, we went for a tattoo run. And tattoos being extremely inexpensive in Florida.. I FINALLY managed to get this done on my lower leg ;). http://pics.livejournal.com/driftwoodwings/pic/001pdfqe
Keen Gear! I was sketching DW for the fans at the Long Beach Comic Con on Halloween weekend along with the artists of the new Darkwing Duck comic. I'll definitely send them a link to these.
Great energy and life in the drawing as always. Stay dangerous!
I just found your site through Ben Balistreri's blog and the instant I saw these AWESOME DW pics I clicked Follow! I absolutely LOVE these!!! You are incredible. <3 <3
Yay to Darkwing!! I SO loved that show as a kid! I still bug Tad about it when I see him, and with the advent of the new comics, I don't think he views me as being quite so crazy anymore. ;) Least, I hope not.
Aw...just terrific. I especially love the one with his ward bundling herself up in his cape. Choice, Toby.
ReplyDeleteAmazing job
ReplyDeleteGreat work!! I love the one with Gosalyn wrapped in his cape.

ReplyDeleteSo cool. I wish they would bring this show back!

ReplyDeleteThese are lovely. You really get a lot of life out of the Cintiq. That's a real challenge. Do you mind if I ask what brushes you use?
ReplyDeleteRandom question: I've never seen model sheets of any of the villains. Do these exist?
ReplyDeleteThere's so much life in these drawings!
ReplyDeleteI feel like there's not a single wasted line. Awesome drawings.
ReplyDeletethese are great--loads of life!
