Gadget Model Sheet (Rescue Rangers) 1988

Playing against type, the idea was to have the girl of the group be the "grease monkey". Inspiration for Gadgets hair style and costume came from a petite story-board artist at Disney TVA with blond hair and bangs who wore a lavender jumpsuit to work on occasion. Gadget turned out to be a very popular character in spite of her ghastly last name -- Hackwrench. Yikes!
In case you missed it. Monterey Jack and Zipper model sheets were in my Aug. 16th post. Check 'em out.

  1. Dude, now you're just getting ridiculous with the contributions you've made to cartoons I loved. Thank you so much!

  3. These are too adorable. The one at lower right in particular looks an awful lot like her inspiration. I wouldn't believe a mouse could so accurately suggest a real girl's personality, but I guess that's the trick, isn't it?

    Kudos & more kudos!

  4. Aha, so it's YOU I have to thank!

I'm currently working on covers for BOOM's new Rescue Rangers comic and I have these model sheets. As a former Disney animation artist myself, these are gold.

  13. Hey there Toby.

Nice Gadget drawings. You design characters well :D

Question, when you designed Gadget for the Rescue Rangers, did you take inspiration from Joy of Superbook? I'm curious because I kept saying to myself that they both look alike.

  16. Just been linked to this post, as I'm a huge RR fan. I don't suppose you can remember the name of the storyboard artist in question...? Or maybe you can and don't want to embarrass her? ;)

  21. Awesome work! Can you please share more Gadget sketches or some other original drawings of her? Its just strange - shes so popular character and theres only one original drawing not from cartoon itself.

  22. Hello Toby! Thanks for your exquisite masterpiece creation. It is infinitely great. I love your Gadget Hackwrench and would like someday to give her a gift for her birthday, but unfortunately, I don't know when she was born? :)
